EvE Online - a world, a home, amongst the stars. These are the voyages of an EvE 'noob' from day one. I hope we have an enjoyable trip...

Ok so I'm curious...

That's not to say I'm curious as in odd.  More that I'm interested in seeking an explanation around the reasons that some people find this...

fun?

Personally I can't think of much that requires less skill than sitting with 10-15 of your mates on a gate waiting for a ship to come through then popping it.

My joy comes from roaming the depths of lowsec hunting suitable targets.  Building my knowledge of ships and fits to know what's worth taking on and what you need to leave well alone.  The thrill of first catching a ship on your 360 scan then narrowing it down checking the pilot, looking for their possible back up in system then warping to where you think they may be with modules hot and finger on the trigger finger is, for me, second to none.

So, what I'm interested to know is where is that fun to be had camping gates?  There must be some otherwise surely those wastes of skin who partake in it wouldn't do it.  Is it simply to add to your killboard?  Hardly a skilled kill though is it?  That would be like including hedgehogs on the scoreboard of 'Deathrace 2000' or shooting fish in a barrel.

When I look at my killboard and of those of my corp mates I know that the kills on them were all born of the hunt and effective tracking and that we all experienced the thrill of not really knowing what the outcome was likely to be.  When the campers look at theres do they simply note, 'another ship that warped into the system with which I boosted my clearly dominant ego.'

Now, you may be able to tell that I have recently lost some Isk to gatecamps.  Not a lot and that's really not the point.  The point is - is that really fun to do?  Somebody please tell me.

If you DO enjoy it - head off to nullsec there's a good puppy and play with others who appreciate your style.  Or join the scouts and do it properly in the woods with bears to play with.

  1. I'm sorry, but that's a little like the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it? Even more ironic when you end up criticising their playing style, suggesting they should leave for nullsec because it doesn't suit your own playing style.

Just a few days ago you posted how much fun you had popping a Tristan and a defenceless Barge mining ... just exactly how is that different to gate camping? Is there more skill involved shooting down completely defenceless mining barges, than gate camping?

Isn't PvP all about using all available advantages to ensure a kill? Be that skill, numbers or whatever else you have that adds to the odds of you coming out victorious?

But I guess next time you find yourself squaring off against an opponent in a lesser ship than yours, you'll gladly dock up to switch to an equal ship? Or when you're out with some corp-members of yours and find a solo ship, you'll ask your fellow corp-members to dock up so you can fight on fair terms, right? And the next time you encounter a mining ship, you'll of course not act on your advantage, since it requires no skill to pop a defenceless mining vessel ... am I right?

While provocatively done, I didn't post this to condemn your actions, piracy is an integral part of EVE. I just thought I'd add some perspective to your line of reasoning (if not lack of insight). Hence the pot and kettle comment I started off this comment with.

  2. Hi Cecilia

    Hope you're doing well.

I agree. Every play style has a place and we dont need to like it to make it valid.

My point wasn't necessarily to condemn. More to question the enjoyment. I genuinely wanted to know why people do it. Perhaps I'm missing some great angle of Eve gameplay and just don't know it.

With respect to my warping in to a frigate and barge (which may have drones) solo. I feel that this presents an entirely different scenario to the gate camp but then I would wouldn't I?

That said there have also been occasions where we've probed down mission runners BUT if they're watching scans they will see the probes and have a chance to escape. Therein lies the thrill of the hunt.

So really my question remains. Someone please tell me why they enjoy camping. I'm genuinely interested.

  3. I am doing well, thank you. Don't think I need to ask you that, you seem to keep yourself busy, having fun. That is, after all, why we play :)

As for enjoyment of gate camps. There could be several potential enjoyments for doing that ... or perhaps fulfilments. Protecting people, being efficient, scaring people away, baiting bigger fish.

Sometimes the direct act isn't the ultimate goal, just a means to an end. And besides, people grind in all ways, shapes and forms in games, why should PvP be any different? Sitting on a gate "grinding" incoming traffic sounds like a perfectly good reason on its own.

But I'll leave comments to those who actually do that sort of thing. Tada :)

  4. I tried gatecamping once. It was terribly boring, and I didn't last 10 minutes. That said, I like when other people hold gatecamps, because it reduces pirate traffic in 0.0 space. I think it likely that they are waiting for one of those pirate gangs to decide to roam 0.0, and run into the camp, and basically it's free money as well as protecting their space as well as hanging out and getting some action. The alternative is to chase down another gang across the ends of the regions. Given that, I can understand why they gatecamp, but i still think it's boring as hell, albeit potentially alot less frustrating.
